Assessment and Reporting

In the first few weeks of the school year, an Open Classroom parent information night is held for each class for the purpose of acquainting parents with teachers’ expectations for the coming year and to assist in the opening of positive communication channels between school and home. At least one Parent or Guardian is encouraged to attend the information night.

Assessment

It is our policy to apply appropriate assessment practices in context, to assess children’s development and progress continuously throughout the year. Teachers design and implement quality assessment that is valid, accessible and reliable.
A variety of methods of formative and summative assessment are employed, including:

  • Work sampling
  • Observation
  • Multimodal demonstrations
  • Conference
  • Journaling
  • Written and oral testing
  • Formative and Summative assessments

As difficulties arise every attempt will be made to bring these to your attention as soon as possible.

Reporting

Written progress reports are provided at the end of each semester, ensuring that parents are kept informed about their child’s academic development and progress.
In addition to the written reports, the school offers parent-teacher interviews at the conclusion of Term 1 and Term 3. Parents/guardians are invited to participate in Parent Teacher Interviews with the class teacher. It is important that at least one parent or guardian attends these meetings, as they serve a vital reporting function and foster effective communication between home and school.

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assessments happen every year. Students in Years 3 and 5 sit the NAPLAN tests in March.

BCE Monitoring

As part of system-wide monitoring of student progress, our students sit a variety of monitoring assessments, determined by their year level. Teachers regularly analyse and respond to the data gathered in these monitoring assessments, to determine next steps forward in helping your child progress in their learning.

The assessments include:

  • Foundational Literacy Monitoring Tool (Prep-Year 1)
  • DIBELS (Prep-Year 6)
  • PAT-R (Reading), PAT-M (Maths) and PAT Spelling Skills (Year 2-Year 6)
  • Learning Progressions (EAL/D students)
